Gaeta ( Italian pronunciation:  [ɡaˈeːta] ; Latin : Caieta , Ancient Greek : Καιέτα) is a city and comune in the province of Latina , in Lazio , central Italy. Set on a promontory stretching towards the Gulf of Gaeta , it is 120 kilometres (75 miles) from Rome and 80 km (50 mi) from Naples .

The Siege of Gaeta was the concluding event of the war between the Kingdom of Sardinia and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies , part of the unification of Italy . It started on November 5, 1860 and ended February 13, 1861, and took place in Gaeta , in today's Southern Lazio ( Italy ).

Gaeta is one of the most beautiful cities in the southern Italy Lazio region, but you won't find it in many guidebooks. That's because Gaeta lacks only one thing - a train station. In spite of this, it's an extremely popular summertime destination because of its seven fabulous beaches. Locals and Italians from all over Italy flock to these beaches to soak up the sun and watch surfing events.
